We have changed and the world around us is a different one than before Covid 19. How grateful we would be to get back to our old lives and a predictable future instead of coping with the “New Normal”. Many of the changes forced by Covid 19 have been rejected as too harsh solutions to long-existing problems before. This fosters the hope that we can embark on bold reforms towards a more sustainable economy and to better align growth and consumption with ecology. The fear of an uncertain future is the common reason of consumers and industry alike to restrain from buying and investing. National and European economic promotion programs and transfer payments will be crucial in overcoming this crisis and will help to avoid larger losses of prosperity. What will be decisive is the stakeholder’s optimism about the future which is driven not only by economical but also psychological aspects.

Some of the soft factors of consumer behavior are influenced by design. But how much has the consumer behavior changed during the recent months and how will the modified customer habits influence design?

The post-Covid 19 customer is more demanding and looks for products that combine pleasure and enjoyment of life with aspects of shared responsibility and security. Intrinsic values like ethics, meaningfulness and ecological compatibility step into the foreground. Purchases are less impulse-driven but more well-thought and planned decisions.

Brands will remain touchpoints and customers expect from them an honest ecologic and social engagement. In that regard, both the digital and physical brand communication at the point of sale must be coherent and well-coordinated. Stationary trade and e-commerce will increasingly intermesh and complement each other. There is potential for new digital ways of shopping and alternative shopping environments.

Design and communication should focus on the individual, the joyful product experience and the product benefits. Product hedonism, products as status symbols and eventually “name dropping design” will lose its importance.

Product innovation will take center stage and the improvement of function, usability and ecological balance should be supported by the design.

Depending on how strong this change of living conditions will influence many aspects of life, we might experience the development of a new design language. It will certainly be a turning point, demanding courage, creativity, and maybe renunciation but will create new opportunities as well.
